Drug-Free Relief for Persistent Headaches

Addressing the Root Cause of Head Pain

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints we see. While many are occasional and short-lived, persistent or recurring headaches can significantly drain your energy and affect your quality of life. What many people don’t realise is that physiotherapy can be a highly effective, drug-free treatment for headaches—particularly those linked to the neck, jaw, and upper back.

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, our clinicians specialise in identifying the musculoskeletal “triggers” of your headaches. By treating the source of the tension rather than just masking the symptoms, we can help reduce both the frequency and the severity of your episodes.

Types of Headaches We Treat

  • Tension-Type Headaches: The most common variety, often described as a “tight band” around the head. These are frequently driven by muscle tension in the shoulders, neck, and jaw, aggravated by stress or long hours at a computer.
  • Cervicogenic Headaches: These headaches actually originate from the joints and muscles of your upper neck (the cervical spine). The pain usually starts at the base of the skull and can radiate over the head to the forehead or behind the eye.
  • Migraines with a “Neck Component”: While we don’t treat the underlying neurological cause of migraines, many sufferers find that neck stiffness acts as a major trigger. Addressing these physical factors can often reduce how often migraines occur.

Common Triggers

Most musculoskeletal headaches are linked to “forward head” posture at a desk, jaw clenching (TMJ dysfunction), or stiffness in the upper back. When these areas become restricted, the nerves and muscles at the base of your skull become sensitised, “referring” pain upwards into your head.

  • Manual Therapy: We use precise joint mobilisations of the upper neck and mid-back to “unlock” stiff segments. Soft tissue techniques are used to release the deep muscles at the base of the skull that are often in a state of constant contraction.
  • Acupuncture: Our specialist physiotherapist, Diane Shaw, provides medical acupuncture—a treatment officially recognised by NICE guidelines for the management of chronic tension-type headaches.
  • Targeted Exercise: We prescribe specific “deep neck flexor” strengthening and postural drills. These exercises help your neck support the weight of your head more efficiently, reducing the strain on your joints.
  • Ergonomic Strategy: We look at your workstation. Simple changes to your screen height or chair support can often be the “missing link” in stopping your headaches from returning every Monday morning.

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we believe that a headache assessment should be thorough and never rushed. Your first session is about untangling your triggers.

Practicalities for your visit:

  • A Detailed 45-Minute Assessment: Your clinician will take a full history of your symptoms—where the pain starts, how it feels, and what makes it worse. We will physically assess your neck, jaw, and upper back.
  • What to wear: Please wear a vest top or loose t-shirt so we can clearly see the movement of your neck and shoulder blades.
  • What to bring: If you have been using a headache diary, please bring it along. It is also helpful to know which medications you have been taking and how often you rely on them.
  • Immediate Insight: You will leave with a clear understanding of your headache “type” and your first set of therapeutic movements to begin calming the tension immediately.
Honesty in Recovery

We believe in realistic expectations. If you have been suffering from headaches for years, the muscles and nerves involved have become highly sensitised.

Clinical Note: While many patients feel a “lightness” and relief after their first manual therapy session, lasting change requires a shift in your daily habits.

You can expect to see a meaningful reduction in the frequency and intensity of your headaches within four to six weeks of consistent treatment and postural correction. Our goal is to move you away from a reliance on painkillers and towards a long-term, self-managed solution that keeps you clear-headed and comfortable.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Research supports physiotherapy as an effective treatment for tension-type headaches and cervicogenic headaches. By addressing the musculoskeletal factors that contribute to your headaches, physiotherapy can reduce their frequency and severity.

Common signs include headache accompanied by neck stiffness, pain that starts at the back of the head and radiates forward, headache triggered by sustained postures or neck movements, and one-sided head pain. Your physiotherapist will carry out specific tests to confirm whether your neck is a contributing factor.

NICE recommends acupuncture for chronic tension-type headaches and recognises the role of manual therapy and exercise in managing headaches with a musculoskeletal component.

Many patients notice a reduction in headache frequency within three to four sessions. Your physiotherapist will advise based on your specific presentation.

Yes. Stress commonly contributes to muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, which can trigger or worsen headaches. Physiotherapy can address the physical effects of stress on these muscles.

If your headaches are new, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms such as visual disturbance, fever, or sudden onset, it is important to see a GP to rule out other causes. For headaches with a musculoskeletal component, physiotherapy is often the most effective treatment.

Acupuncture may help reduce the frequency of migraines, particularly where neck tension is a contributing factor. Your physiotherapist can advise whether acupuncture is appropriate for your situation.

In most cases, gentle exercise can help. Your physiotherapist will advise on appropriate activities and any modifications needed.

No. You can book directly without a GP referral.
