Expert Treatment for All Types of Knee Pain

Reclaim Your Mobility and Strength

Your knees bear a significant load every time you walk, climb stairs, squat, or run. When knee pain strikes, it can quickly shrink your world, limiting your independence and stopping you from staying active. Whether your pain developed gradually, started after a sudden injury, or is linked to a long-term condition, specialist physiotherapy is the key to recovery.

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, our team of physiotherapists and sports therapists are highly experienced in diagnosing and treating a vast range of knee conditions. We don’t just treat the symptoms; we find the root cause of your pain to get you back on your feet with confidence.

Common Causes

  • Knee Osteoarthritis: Gradual thinning of the joint cartilage, causing stiffness and swelling—the most common cause of knee pain in adults over 50.
  • Patellofemoral Pain: Often called “anterior knee pain,” this affects the area around or behind the kneecap. It is frequent in runners, cyclists, and those who sit for long periods.
  • Ligament & Meniscal Injuries: Tears or sprains of the ACL, MCL, or meniscus, often caused by twisting movements or impact during sport.
  • Patellar Tendinopathy: Known as “Jumper’s Knee,” this causes sharp pain just below the kneecap during explosive movements.
  • ITB Syndrome: “Runner’s Knee” causing persistent pain on the outside of the joint.
  • Post-Surgical Recovery: Specialist rehabilitation following Knee Replacement, ACL reconstruction, or meniscal repair.
  • The “Whole Leg” Assessment: Your knee is often the “victim” of what is happening at the hip or the ankle. We assess your entire lower limb to see if weakness or stiffness elsewhere is placing undue stress on your knee joint.
  • Exercise Prescription: Strengthening the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes is the foundation of knee health. We provide a structured programme that builds stability and control, protecting the joint from future irritation.
  • Hydrotherapy: Our on-site heated pool is an exceptional tool for knee rehab. The water’s buoyancy reduces the load on the joint, allowing you to move and strengthen effectively even when walking on land is painful.
  • Manual Therapy: We use joint mobilisations and soft tissue techniques to reduce muscle guarding, improve your range of motion, and settle “angry” tissues.
  • Taping & Bracing: Where appropriate, we use specific taping techniques to “offload” the kneecap or provide external support while you build the internal strength needed for long-term stability.
  • Shockwave Therapy: For chronic tendon issues like Patellar Tendinopathy, we offer Focused Shockwave Therapy to stimulate healing in stubborn tissues.

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we know that knee pain can feel very restrictive. Your first session is designed to provide a clear diagnosis and a practical “day one” strategy.

Practicalities for your visit:

  • A Comprehensive 45-Minute Assessment: Your clinician will perform specific diagnostic tests to identify exactly which structures are involved and assess your walking and movement patterns.
  • What to wear: Please wear shorts so we can clearly see the knee joint, the alignment of your legs, and how your muscles are functioning.
  • What to bring: If you have any previous imaging reports (MRI or X-ray) or are currently using a knee brace or orthotics, please bring them along.
  • Immediate Plan: You will leave with a clear understanding of your condition and your first set of therapeutic exercises.
Honesty in Recovery

We believe in realistic expectations. The knee is a major weight-bearing joint, and changing how it handles load takes time.

Clinical Note: While manual therapy and taping can provide a “window of relief” almost immediately, building the muscle strength required to protect an arthritic or injured knee typically takes eight to twelve weeks.

We will be honest about your recovery timeline from the start. Whether your goal is to walk to the shops without a “twinge,” return to five-a-side football, or prepare for a total knee replacement, we provide the expert coaching and steady progression needed to get you there safely.

Yes. NICE recommends exercise as a core treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Physiotherapy can reduce pain, improve strength and mobility, and help you stay active. It is also effective in delaying or preparing for knee replacement surgery.

This depends on the condition. Patellofemoral pain may improve within four to six weeks. Ligament injuries can take several months. Your physiotherapist will set realistic expectations based on your specific situation.

This depends on the cause. Some knee conditions require a temporary reduction in running, while others can be managed alongside continued activity. Your physiotherapist will advise on what is safe for you.

Yes. Weakness in the hip muscles, particularly the gluteals, is a common contributor to knee pain. We always assess the hip as part of a knee examination.

Not always. Research shows that many meniscal tears can be managed effectively with physiotherapy. Your physiotherapist will assess your symptoms and advise on the best approach.
