Specialist Support for Neurological Conditions
Empowering Movement and Independence
Living with a neurological condition can profoundly affect your balance, strength, and overall independence. Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialist branch of medicine dedicated to treating conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system.
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, our specialist neuro-physiotherapy team is committed to helping you improve your function and quality of life. We offer a unique, “joined-up” approach by providing both land-based clinical sessions and on-site Hydrotherapy, giving you access to the two most effective treatment environments under one roof.
Conditions We Treat
Our neuro-physio team provides expert, long-term support for:
- Stroke Recovery: Re-learning movement patterns and managing “one-sided” weakness.
- Parkinson’s Disease: Focusing on gait (walking), balance, and maintaining fluid movement.
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Managing fatigue, muscle stiffness (spasticity), and core stability.
Whether you are in the early, acute weeks following a neurological event or are looking for better ways to manage a long-term condition, we tailor our treatment to exactly where you are today—and where you want to be tomorrow.
The Science of Recovery: Neuroplasticity
The core of our treatment is based on Neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections. Through repetitive, task-specific exercises, we help “retrain” your nervous system to find new pathways for movement.
Our treatment focuses on:
- Gait Retraining: Improving the safety and efficiency of your walking pattern.
- Balance & Fall Prevention: Building the core stability needed for daily confidence.
- Upper Limb Function: Reaching, grasping, and fine motor skills for activities like dressing or eating.
- Spasticity Management: Using movement and positioning to reduce muscle stiffness and discomfort.
Our Dual-Approach to Neuro-Rehab
Land-Based Physiotherapy
Conducted in our specialist clinic, these sessions focus on high-repetition, functional tasks. We work one-to-one to help you master movements like standing up from a chair, climbing stairs, or navigating your home environment safely.
Neurological Hydrotherapy
Our on-site heated pool (34C) is a game-changer for neurological patients. The buoyancy of the water supports your body weight, effectively “switching off” gravity. This allows you to practise balance and walking movements that might feel too risky or heavy to perform on land. The warmth also plays a crucial role in relaxing stiff, spastic muscles.
Your First Appointment
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we know that neurological conditions require a deep understanding of your personal history. Your first session is unhurried and comprehensive.
Practicalities for your visit
- A Detailed 60-Minute Assessment: We take a full hour to assess your movement, strength, sensation, and balance. We want to understand your specific goals—whether that is walking to the local shop or simply being able to stand unaided.
- What to wear: Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and supportive footwear (like trainers). If you use a walking aid (stick, frame, or orthosis), please bring it with you.
- Support: You are more than welcome to bring a family member or carer to the session to help discuss your history and home environment.
- A Defined Plan: You will leave with a clear roadmap of how physiotherapy can help and a structured programme tailored to your current ability.
Honesty in Neurological Care
We believe in realistic expectations. Neurological recovery is a process of “marginal gains” and consistent effort.
Clinical Note: The nervous system takes time to heal and adapt. You may not see dramatic changes in a single week, but consistency is the key to neuroplasticity.
While some functional improvements can happen quickly, most significant neurological progress is seen over three to six months of regular, targeted therapy. We won’t promise “miracle cures,” but we will provide the expert clinical guidance and the supportive environment you need to reach your maximum physical potential.
