Specialist Physiotherapy for Neurological Conditions
Reclaiming Movement and Independence
Neurological conditions affect the way your brain and nervous system control every aspect of your physical self—from your balance and coordination to your strength and sensation. Living with a condition such as a Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or Multiple Sclerosis can be a profound challenge, but specialist neurological physiotherapy is designed to help you maintain your function and improve your quality of life.
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we host a dedicated neuro physiotherapy team with the specialist training required to handle these complex cases. Uniquely, we offer both clinic-based rehabilitation and Hydrotherapy under one roof, giving you access to the most effective environments for neurological recovery.
Conditions We Treat
Stroke Rehabilitation
A stroke interrupts the brain’s communication with the body, impacting movement, balance, and sensation. Our focus is on rebuilding those pathways. Recovery can continue for months and even years after the event; it is truly never too late to benefit from targeted rehabilitation.
Parkinson’s Disease
Common symptoms like tremors, muscle rigidity, and “slowness” of movement (bradykinesia) can make daily life feel like an uphill battle. We use specific gait training and balance strategies to help you maintain your mobility and, crucially, reduce your risk of falls.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Because MS symptoms like fatigue and spasticity can fluctuate, our treatment is adaptive. We work with you to manage symptoms as they arise, helping you maintain function and strength through both the “flares” and the periods of remission.
How Neurological Physiotherapy Helps
- Neuroplasticity-Based Training: The brain has a remarkable ability to “rewire” itself by forming new neural connections. We harness this through repetitive, task-specific practice—essentially teaching the brain new ways to control your movements.
- Land-Based Clinic Sessions: One-to-one sessions focusing on functional tasks like standing up from a chair, improving your walking technique, and building core strength.
- The Hydrotherapy Advantage: Our on-site heated pool is a “game-changer” for neuro-rehab. The warmth helps relax tight, spastic muscles, while the buoyancy supports your weight, allowing you to practice movements in the water that might be impossible on land.
- Falls Prevention: We incorporate reactive balance training and strengthening to give you the confidence to move safely around your home and community.
Your First Appointment
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we believe that neurological recovery is built on a partnership between the therapist, the patient, and their support network. Your first session is about establishing a clear baseline and setting meaningful goals.
Practicalities for your visit:
- A Detailed 60-Minute Assessment: Neurological cases are complex, so we dedicate a full hour to your first visit. This allows us to take a deep dive into your clinical history and assess your coordination, strength, and balance in detail.
- What to wear: Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and supportive footwear.
- Support for Carers: Family members or carers are more than welcome to attend. Understanding the exercises and strategies used in the clinic can help you feel more confident supporting your loved one at home.
- What to bring: If you have any hospital discharge summaries, consultant letters, or a list of your current medications, please bring them along.
- Immediate Strategy: You will leave with a clear understanding of how we can help and a structured plan for your rehabilitation, whether that involves the clinic, the pool, or both.
Honesty in Recovery
We believe in realistic expectations. Neurological rehabilitation is often a longer journey than recovering from a typical sports injury. Because we are working with the central nervous system, progress is driven by consistency and repetition.
Clinical Note: Reorganising neural pathways (neuroplasticity) is a biological process that doesn’t happen overnight.
While you may feel more “mobile” immediately following a session in the warm hydrotherapy pool, lasting functional gains typically require several months of regular practice. Our team will be honest with you about your prognosis from the start, providing the expert coaching and steady encouragement needed to reach your maximum potential for independence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it too late to start physiotherapy after a stroke?
Can physiotherapy slow the progression of Parkinson's disease?
Is hydrotherapy suitable for all neurological patients?
How often should I attend?
This depends on your condition, goals, and stage of recovery. Some patients attend weekly, while others benefit from intensive blocks of treatment. Your physiotherapist will recommend a frequency that suits your needs.
Can family members attend sessions?
Yes. We encourage family members and carers to attend, particularly in the early stages. Understanding the exercises and strategies helps support progress at home.
What is the difference between neuro physio and standard physio?
Neurological physiotherapists have additional specialist training in how conditions affecting the nervous system impact movement and function. They use specific treatment approaches such as neuroplasticity-based training that standard physiotherapists may not be trained in.
Will I see the same physiotherapist?
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed for self-funded appointments.
Is neuro physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Yes. We are recognised by Bupa, AXA PPP, Aviva, WPA, Cigna, and Vitality.
