Sports Therapy in Whiteley
Get Back to the Activities You Love
Injuries are an unwanted part of an active life, whether you are a competitive athlete, a weekend runner, or someone who has simply “overdone it” in the garden. Sports Therapy focuses specifically on the prevention, assessment, and high-level rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries related to sport and physical activity.
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, our Sports Therapists work alongside our Physiotherapy team to provide a seamless approach to your recovery. From sudden ankle sprains to those nagging overuse injuries that just won’t clear up, we help you recover effectively and, crucially, reduce the risk of the same injury sidelining you again next season.
Conditions We Treat
Our specialist Sports Therapy service is designed for rapid recovery from:
- Ligament Sprains: Ankle, knee, and wrist stability issues.
- Muscle Tears: Acute hamstring, calf, and groin strains.
- Overuse & “Running” Injuries: Shin splints, Runner’s Knee (ITB syndrome), and Achilles pain.
- Tendon Issues: Patellar tendinopathy and rotator cuff irritations.
- The Final Stretch: We specialize in the “Return to Sport” phase, transitioning you from basic movement back to full-speed training.
If you are unsure whether Sports Therapy or Physiotherapy is the best fit for your specific injury, simply give us a call and our team will guide you to the right clinician.
Our Performance-Led Approach
Biomechanical Assessment
We don’t just look at where it hurts. We analyze how you move, jump, and run to find the “weak link” in the chain that caused the injury in the first place.
Hands-On Recovery
We utilize advanced soft tissue massage, joint mobilisations, and medical taping to reduce swelling and “kick-start” the healing process in those early days.
Integrated Tech & Facilities
Our Sports Therapists have full access to our on-site Hydrotherapy pool for low-impact conditioning and Shockwave Therapy for stubborn tendon injuries.
Sport-Specific Drills
Your rehab won’t just be on a treatment couch. We use progressive drills—from balance work to agility and power—to ensure your body is ready for the specific demands of your sport.
Your First Appointment
At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we know that when you’re injured, time feels like it’s standing still. Your first session is about getting a clear diagnosis and a “day one” plan to get you moving again.
Practicalities for your visit
- A Focused 45-Minute Assessment: Your therapist will take a full injury history—exactly how it happened and what your specific goals are—followed by clinical testing to grade the severity of the injury.
- What to wear: Please wear sports kit (shorts and a vest/t-shirt). We need to see how your muscles and joints are interacting during movement.
- What to bring: Please bring your primary sports footwear (e.g., your running shoes or football boots) so we can check for wear patterns or support issues.
Immediate Strategy
You will leave with a clear rehabilitation roadmap and your first set of “active recovery” exercises to start immediately.
Honesty in Recovery
We believe in realistic expectations. In the world of sports, there is a big difference between being “able to walk” and being “ready to compete.”
Clinical Note: Tissues have biological healing times that we cannot bypass. A grade-two muscle tear needs time to knit back together before it can handle a sprint.
We won’t promise a “miracle fix” for a significant tear, but we will provide the most efficient path to recovery. Most sports injuries show a return to functional activity within four to six weeks, but “returning to play” at 100% intensity often requires eight to twelve weeks of dedicated, progressive loading. Our goal is to ensure that when you cross that finish line or step back onto the pitch, you are stronger and more resilient than you were before the injury.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a sports therapist and a physiotherapist?
Sports therapists specialise in the prevention and treatment of injuries related to sport and physical activity. Physiotherapists have a broader scope and can also treat neurological and respiratory conditions. Both professions are represented within our team, and we will direct you to the most appropriate clinician.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly.
Can you help with long-standing injuries?
Yes. We regularly treat chronic and recurring injuries. If your injury has not responded to previous treatment, a fresh assessment may identify factors that have been missed.
Do you offer return-to-sport programmes?
Yes. Our rehabilitation programmes include sport-specific training and functional testing to ensure you are ready to return safely.
Can I access hydrotherapy and shockwave therapy through sports therapy?
Yes. Our sports therapists are trained in both hydrotherapy and shockwave therapy, and can incorporate these into your treatment plan where appropriate.
Is sports therapy covered by insurance?
We are recognised by Bupa, AXA PPP, Aviva, WPA, Cigna, and Vitality. Coverage for sports therapy may depend on your specific policy.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing that allows access to the injured area. Bring sports footwear if the injury is related to running or a specific sport.
