Professional Support for Communication and Swallowing

Empowering Your Voice and Wellbeing

Communication is at the heart of how we connect with the world, and being able to swallow safely is essential for our health and enjoyment of life. When these functions are disrupted—whether by a developmental delay, a sudden stroke, or a long-term neurological condition—it can be incredibly frustrating and isolating.

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, our Speech and Language Therapist works with both adults and children to provide expert assessment and compassionate treatment. We move beyond “speech” alone, addressing the complex mechanics of language, voice, fluency, and swallowing safety to help you or your loved one communicate with clarity and eat with confidence.

Our Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service supports a wide range of needs across all ages:

  • Speech & Articulation: Helping children and adults with clarity, phonology, and apraxia (the coordination of speech movements).
  • Language & Understanding: Assisting those who struggle to find the right words or have difficulty processing what others are saying.
  • Neurological Recovery: Specialist support following a Stroke or Brain Injury, as well as managing communication changes in Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
  • Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia): Clinical assessment to ensure eating and drinking are safe and comfortable.
  • Voice & Fluency: Treatment for voice strain, persistent hoarseness, and stammering.
  • Paediatric Development: Supporting children through speech delays to ensure they reach their full potential.

Our Clinical Approach

We don’t just look at the symptoms. We look at the underlying cause—whether it is muscular, neurological, or developmental—to ensure the treatment is correctly targeted.

Every voice is unique. We build a bespoke programme of exercises and strategies designed to improve your specific speech clarity or swallowing safety.

Therapy doesn’t end when you leave the clinic. We provide clear, practical “homework” for parents or carers to ensure progress continues every day.

We monitor progress closely, adjusting the “challenge” of our sessions as your skills and confidence grow.

Your First Appointment

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we understand that the first step into therapy can feel daunting. We ensure our environment is calm, supportive, and entirely focused on your goals.

  • A Focused 60-Minute Session: Your initial assessment typically lasts an hour. This gives the therapist enough time to take a full history, carry out formal testing, and discuss the findings without feeling rushed.
  • For Children: We ask that a parent or legal guardian attends the session. We use play-based, age-appropriate observations to make the assessment feel like a natural, positive experience for the child.
  • Swallowing Assessments: If you are visiting us regarding swallowing (Dysphagia), please let us know in advance if there are specific foods or liquids you find particularly difficult.
  • A Clear Roadmap: You will leave the first session with a clear understanding of the difficulty and a defined plan for treatment.

We believe in realistic expectations. Communication and swallowing involve some of the most complex neural pathways in the human body.

Clinical Note: Progress in Speech and Language Therapy is often measured in small, consistent “wins” rather than overnight changes.

Whether we are helping a child develop new sounds or an adult re-learning to speak after a stroke, the brain requires repetition and time to rewire. While some strategies can provide immediate relief (especially in swallowing safety), true functional improvement in speech and language typically takes several months of consistent practice. We are here to provide the expert coaching and steady encouragement needed to make that journey successful.
