Fast, Accurate Musculoskeletal Imaging

See the Cause of Your Pain in Real Time

Diagnostic ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed, real-time images of your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Unlike an X-ray, it involves no radiation, and unlike an MRI, there are no enclosed spaces or long waiting lists. Often, a bedside ultrasound can provide a definitive diagnosis during your appointment, saving you a trip to the hospital.

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, diagnostic ultrasound is performed by Peter Monk, an experienced HCPC-registered practitioner. Because we conduct our scans on-site, your results and a clear explanation of the findings are typically available immediately.

Ultrasound is the “gold standard” for assessing soft tissue structures. It is particularly effective for identifying:

  • Tendon Injuries: Rotator cuff tears in the shoulder, Achilles tendinopathy, and Tennis Elbow.
  • Muscle & Ligament Tears: Mapping the exact grade and location of sports-related tears.
  • Bursitis & Inflammation: Visualising fluid-filled sacs (bursa) or joint effusions (swelling).
  • Calcific Deposits: Identifying “chalky” calcium build-up within tendons.
  • Soft Tissue Lumps: Assessing cysts (such as a Baker’s Cyst) or other unexplained swellings.

Ultrasound-Guided Injections

If an injection is recommended as part of your treatment plan, we don’t believe in “blind” procedures. Using ultrasound guidance, your practitioner can see the needle and the target tissue in real-time on a screen.

The benefits of a guided injection include:

Ensuring the medication (such as a corticosteroid or lubricant) is delivered to the exact millimetre required.

Avoiding nearby nerves or blood vessels that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Research shows that guided injections are more effective at reducing pain and inflammation than those performed without imaging.

Your Appointment: What to Expect

At The Whiteley Physiotherapy Centre, we prioritise clarity and patient comfort. A diagnostic scan is a painless procedure that typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

  • The Procedure: A cool gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld probe (transducer) is moved over the area. You can often watch the screen alongside your practitioner as they explain the anatomy.
  • What to wear: Please wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being scanned (e.g., a vest top for shoulders or shorts for knees).
  • For Injections: If you are having a guided injection, your practitioner will discuss the risks and benefits in detail. A local anaesthetic may be used to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible.
  • Immediate Results: You won’t have to wait days for a letter. Peter will explain the findings to you then and there, allowing your physiotherapy team to adjust your rehab plan immediately.

We believe in realistic expectations. While ultrasound is an incredible tool for soft tissues, it has its limits.

Clinical Note: Ultrasound cannot “see through” bone.

If your clinician suspects an issue deep inside a joint (such as a central labral tear in the hip) or a bone stress fracture, they may still recommend an MRI or X-ray for a complete picture. However, for the vast majority of sports injuries and “wear and tear” conditions, a diagnostic ultrasound at our Whiteley clinic provides all the information needed to get your recovery moving.

Ultrasound guidance allows your practitioner to see the needle in real time, ensuring the injection is placed accurately. This improves effectiveness and reduces the risk of complications compared to blind injections.
You may feel some pressure or brief discomfort. A local anaesthetic is often used to minimise pain. Most patients tolerate the procedure well.
Ultrasound is excellent for soft tissue assessment and is often sufficient for diagnosis. In some cases, an MRI may still be recommended for deeper structures or more complex investigations. Your practitioner will advise.
